What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown may also be called a “cap.” These restorations are custom-made to fit snugly over the entire portion of a tooth that protrudes above the gumline. Their job is to reshape these teeth while also protecting them from damage. Crowns are often used if:

  • A tooth has extensive decay
  • A tooth is broken or cracked
  • Severe wear and tear has affected a tooth
  • A tooth has undergone root canal therapy

Crowns can be constructed of various materials. In our practice, we understand that aesthetics are important to our patients. That is why we offer restorations made of top-quality materials like porcelain and Emax, both of which look almost identical to real tooth enamel.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

To start the crown process, we will numb your mouth and then prepare your tooth. Typically, this involves the removal of a portion of its enamel. Then, we use our digital impression scanner to capture a highly detailed representation of the tooth and the surrounding dentition.

Traditionally, crowns are made in an off-site dental lab. This process can take a few weeks and requires the use of a temporary crown. Here at Wright Naeger Dentistry, we do things differently. We use CEREC CAD/CAM technology to design and fabricate beautiful permanent crowns right here in our office. In most cases, the entire process can be completed in a single appointment.

As a result of your decision to get a dental crown, you may get to enjoy the following benefits:

  • Increased confidence: Crowns look incredibly natural, so you should be able to smile confidently even if your restoration is toward the front of your mouth.
  • Improved function: Crowns are sturdy enough to stand up to everyday chewing, so you can easily and painlessly enjoy your favorite foods.
  • Longevity: With proper maintenance, crowns have the potential to last for many years.
  • Avoid extractions: A crown can protect a tooth that might otherwise require extraction. By preserving it, you protect your oral health and avoid the expense of tooth replacement.
